Downgrade plan implications
Business or Starter to Free plan
When you downgrade from a Business plan or Starter plan to a Free Plan, the following changes occur when the original subscription expires and the downgrade is complete:
-
Active Boards
Only your three most recently created boards will remain active and editable. -
Other Boards
All other boards will become view-only. You will not be able to edit them. -
Projects
You will not be able to modify or delete your existing projects. -
Custom Templates
Custom templates created under the paid plan will no longer be available. -
Billing Settings
Your Billing settings section will be hidden. It is recommended to download any post-payment invoices before the downgrade completes. -
Outstanding Payments
If there are any outstanding payments for additional licenses accrued during the paid plan period, your card will be charged when you initiate the cancellation process. -
Private Boards
The Free Plan does not support private boards. Any existing private boards will be locked (view-only). You may need to make them public (if the board content allows) or take other actions to access their content fully. (Refer to Miro documentation on unlocking private boards).
Business to Starter plan
When you downgrade from a Business plan to a Starter plan, the following changes occur when the original subscription expires and the downgrade is complete:
-
Subscription Activity
Your Business Plan subscription will remain active with all its features until the end of your current billing cycle. The downgrade to Starter Plan will occur at the start of the next billing cycle. -
Payment Information
You can update your payment information at any time during this transition period. Any changes will apply to future payments under the Starter Plan. -
License Adjustments
You can continue to add or remove licenses while the Business Plan is still active. Adjustments will be billed on a prorated basis for the current Business Plan cycle. -
Team Merging
If you have multiple teams under your Business Plan, they will be merged into a single team on the Starter Plan. This single team will include all users and boards from the previous teams. -
Guest Access
Guests who had editing access on boards under the Business Plan will lose this editing access. On the Starter Plan, guest access is typically view-only, or they may no longer be required to sign in for certain types of public board access.
Board status on a Free plan
When you downgrade to a Free plan, the following changes to board status occur:
-
Active boards
You can create an unlimited number of boards, but only the three most recently created boards will remain available for editing and collaboration by your team. -
View-only boards
All other boards will become locked in a view-only mode. You will be able to see their content but not make any changes. -
Project modifications
You will not be able to modify or delete your existing Spaces.
Private boards on a Free Plan
When you downgrade to a Free plan, the following changes to private boards occur:
-
Inactive status
Private boards become inactive because board privacy, which restricts access to specific users, is not a feature supported on the Free plan. These boards will be locked. -
Unlocking private boards
Information on how to potentially unlock these private boards, for example, by making them public if appropriate, can be found in dedicated Miro Help Center articles.
FAQ
Why am I still being charged after initiating a downgrade?
Upon canceling your higher-tier plan to initiate a downgrade, you may receive an additional prorated invoice. This charge is typically for any extra seats (licenses) you added during the current billing period before the cancellation was processed. The downgrade to the new plan's rate will take effect after the current paid period ends.
