Backlog is your main workspace in Miro Insights where you manage all your features and issues. This central hub provides comprehensive tools for organizing, prioritizing, and tracking your product development work.
Your backlog contains two main types of items:
- Features: New capabilities or enhancements you're planning to build.
- Issues: Bugs, problems, or technical debt that needs to be addressed.
Each item includes details like priority level, associated companies, feedback counts, dollar value impact, and current status.
Organizing your backlog
Adding custom fields
Customize your backlog to match your workflow by adding fields that matter to your team. This helps you capture the specific information you need for decision-making.
Grouping items
Organize your backlog by grouping items by different criteria:
- Initiative: Group by product area or strategic objective.
- Priority: Organize by urgency or importance levels.
- Status: Group by development stage (idea, research, in progress, shipped).
- Companies: See which features are requested by specific customers.
Filtering and searching
Narrow down your view to focus on what matters:
- Use the Filter button to show specific subsets of your backlog.
- Search within views to quickly find specific items.
- Combine multiple filters for precise control over what you see.
Working with views
Views save your preferred combinations of grouping and filtering settings.
Managing views
- Default view: Your standard backlog perspective that others see.
- Create new views: Save custom combinations of grouping and filtering with a descriptive name.
- Reorder views: Drag views to change their order in the interface.
- Shared visibility: View changes affect what all team members see.
Effective view strategies
- Create views for different team focuses (engineering backlog, customer requests, high-priority items).
- Use descriptive names that explain the view's purpose.
- Regularly review and update views as your needs change.
Bulk operations
Multi-select actions
Select multiple items to perform batch operations:
- Merge items: Combine duplicate or related features/issues.
- Delete items: Remove obsolete or invalid entries.
- Bulk status updates: Change status across multiple items simultaneously.
💡 To ensure accuracy and avoid mistakes:
- Use filtering first to isolate the items you want to modify.
- Double-check your selection before performing irreversible actions like delete.
- Merge similar items to reduce clutter and focus discussions.

Access from canvas
The backlog is also available through the Insights side panel on your Miro boards. This lets you browse, filter, and search your backlog items, then select specific items to add directly to your canvas as cards. Perfect for roadmap planning sessions and prioritization meetings where you want to visualize your actual product data.
