Who can do it: Anyone with a full license
Enabled by: Company Admins
Available on: Starter, Business plan
With licensing configuration enabled, anyone with a full license (seat) can invite new members and increase the size of the team/subscription automatically if there aren’t enough licenses/seats available. Enabling this setting can help distribute the administrative burden of team management.
Enabling/disabling licensing configuration on Business plan
Licensing configuration involves two steps:
- The feature must be enabled at the Company-level (for new Business plan subscriptions created after August 2023, it will be enabled automatically).
- If you want more granularity of control, you can configure invitation settings at the Team-level (optional).
- Go to Company settings > Billing > Licensing configuration
- Toggle the switch for “Anyone can expand the team”
Enabling licensing configuration at the Company level
✏️ Licensing configuration is enabled for all new Business plan accounts by default. For existing Business plans, the feature will be disabled. You can check whether it’s enabled by going to your Company settings > Billing > Licensing configuration.
- Go to Teams
- Click the team you wish to affect
- Click Permissions then scroll to Team invitation settings and choose “All [company name] teams”
Enabling licensing configuration for all teams
✏️ While licensing configuration is set per team, enabling the feature at the Company level means any new teams that are created will automatically have the ability to expand the team.
When licensing configuration is enabled, a banner will appear at the top of the Billing section and below the Team invitation settings in Team permissions. A banner will also appear in Active users.

Configuring team invitation settings on Starter plan
Licensing configuration is enabled for everyone by default, but Company Admins can control who can use it by adjusting team invitation settings.
- From profile settings, go to User management > Permissions > Team invitation settings.
- Select who you wish to give permission to invite others and configure licenses. You can additionally include the team invite link so others can join the team.

How to use licensing configuration
Sharing a board with a new team member and entering their email address will trigger the following dialog box. If all of the plan’s paid seats are being used, the inviter will see a message at the bottom alerting them to the cost of adding new seats.
