What is a template description?
Template descriptions introduce users to your template with context about why it was created, what it's for, how to use it, and more. The description appears on your Miroverse template page below a preview of your template.
Why is a template description important?
Writing a clear, readable template description has benefits such as:
1. Helping people determine if it fits their needs. The description can explain what your template is all about, who it is for, its purpose, why it was created, how to use it, plus any tips, tricks, or best practices to get the most out of the template’s content.
2. Offering inspiration. Many people browse Miroverse to learn new interesting ways to use Miro to solve similar problems. Your description can provide additional context for them to learn from your methods.
3. Helping people find your template. Along with your template’s title, the description decides whether it appears in search results. If someone searches for a keyword or phrase to find a template like yours, but your title doesn’t include that particular keyword, the added context in your description means it may appear in additional relevant searches.
What makes a good template description?
Good template descriptions are comprehensive, easy to read, and well-organized with proper context, keywords and phrases.
Comprehensive
Your description must be at least 300 characters long, including spaces. However, it's a best practice to ensure you’re offering as much information as necessary for potential users to get the most out of your template. While description length will vary based on the template and its subject matter, on average we recommend 500-800 words or 1000-5000 characters including spaces.
Easy to read
Provide sufficient context using straightforward, simple, and clear language to explain your template and how to use it. Imagine you’re explaining it to someone who has never heard of this concept before — where would you start? Which details would you include?
Well-organized and navigable
Use headers (H2s, H3s), bulleted lists, and numbered lists to format your description so people can find the information they need quickly. Place the most important information near the top of your description, with less pertinent information towards the bottom, such as FAQs or extra tips.
Includes keywords and phrases
As mentioned above, part of the description’s purpose is to help people find your template. Include common and familiar words and phrases associated with your template’s purpose and subject matter to help people searching for similar solutions.
How to write a good template description
After taking a moment to determine the needs of your audience, divide your content into well-organized sections using paragraphs, bullet points, and lists. This makes it easier for both readers and search engines to understand your content.
Consider your audience
Imagine the person who is searching for and using your template. This will help you get an idea of the main sections of your description. Ask yourself questions such as…
-
- Is this person in a specific role or industry?
- What are their goals and motivations in seeking this template?
- How does this template solve their problems?
- What will the template help them achieve or accomplish?
- What kind of supporting information might they be seeking?
- What details, definitions, instructions, or resources do they need to be successful with this template?
Create your main sections with H2 section headers
Always use the H2 format to create section headers — these are the most important elements of your description. Headers help readers understand and navigate the content. They should be straightforward and concise, clearly communicating the purpose of the section. Your headers should include relevant keywords and phrases around the practice, subject matter, industry, or role. Use the answers from the questions above to develop section headers.
Some examples of headers include:
- About the [TEMPLATE TITLE] template
- Who can use this [TEMPLATE TITLE] template
- How to use this [TEMPLATE TITLE] template
- What this [TEMPLATE TILTE] helps you accomplish
- Tips and best practices
Create subsections with H3s
If any of your sections feel long and disorganized, nest subheaders (H3s) beneath your H2s to break them up into subsections. Never use an H3 unless it is nested below an H2. For example:
H2 - What is a retrospective?
H3 - What is a team retrospective?
H3 - Who uses retrospectives?
H3 - Why are retrospectives useful?
H3 - When to do a retrospective
H2 - How to use this retrospective template
H2 - How to facilitate a retrospective
H2 - Retrospective tips and best practices
Use numbered and bulleted lists to make your description easy to read
Use bullets for unordered lists, and numbers for ordered lists (such as step-by-step instructions). These tools help make your content more organized, readable, and engaging. You can also use emojis to make your description feel more engaging.
Pro tips
Copy/paste content from your template board
If you’ve already written instructions or information on your template’s board, copy/paste it into the description field during the submission process to save yourself the extra work. While any content within the board itself cannot be used to help with search results, when you add it to the description it becomes available to improve your template’s visibility.
