Understanding the charges on your receipt or invoice
How prorated billing works
When you add seats (licenses) or change your plan, you'll receive an invoice for the prorated amount.
You can view examples of how prorated billing is calculated in How Miro billing works.
When you change your plan (e.g. from Starter to Business), we issue a new invoice with the prorated amount. The invoice is called renewal and can be found in your billing settings.
When adding seats (licenses):
- on monthly subscriptions, the prorated amount is added to your monthly renewal invoice.
- on annual subscriptions, the prorated amount is added to a true-up invoice which is issued monthly (for automated payments) or quarterly (for self-serve invoicing).
How prorated charges appear on your invoice
When you add or remove seats, you change your team size. Whenever you change your team size you’ll see 2 lines in your invoice - remaining time and unused time.
The billing system calculates the cost of the remaining time for the new team size and any credit for unused time from the previous team size.
If you see unexplained charges, you may have accidentally added seats.
Adding seats (licenses)
When you invite members above your current team size, you’ll be charged the prorated amount for each additional seat (license) until the end of the billing period.
✏️ On Starter plan newly invited members first start a 7-day trial, after which they become a paid seat (license).
In the example below, the team size increased on March 23, 2021 from 13 to 14 licenses and an additional prorated charge was added from March 23 till the end of the billing period.
The prorated charge for the additional 14th license
Removing seats (licenses)
If you remove seats (licenses), you’ll receive credit for any unused time.
In the example below, on March 24, 2021 the team size was reduced from 22 to 12 licenses. The credit was calculated starting from March 24 till the end of the billing period.

Adding or removing multiple licenses at once
If multiple licenses were removed or added at once, the billing system calculates them together.
For example, on March 31, 2021, 3 licenses were removed at the same time and the prorated credit was added to the invoice for all three seats.

Changes to a Miro plan
When changing Miro plans or switching your subscription type from monthly to yearly, the billing system automatically updates your invoice. The invoice is prorated, so the amount for any unused time on your previous subscription is applied as a credit in your new invoice.
Credit for unused time on a monthly subscription is applied to the new yearly subscription amount
Applied balance (credit)
If you remove seats and decrease your team size, you’ll receive credit on your next invoice. This appears as Applied balance on your invoice.
If the total amount of your invoice is negative (e.g. -$85.74), the credit is applied to your subscription balance. You can also pay future invoices with any remaining balance.
