Co-owner is a role that allows board owners to share responsibilities of preparing and facilitating collaboration, whether it’s a live session or asynchronous. Сo-owners can perform almost all the actions available for a board owner, from managing board settings to hiding and revealing content - you will always have a backup in case the board owner is unavailable. Learn how you can activate the role and invite co-owners to your boards and projects.

How to enable or disable the co-owner role for a team
Set up by: Company Admins
To allow users in your team to assign specific members as co-owners of projects and boards, go to Team settings > Permissions, scroll down to the Collaboration settings section, and switch the corresponding toggle.

On Enterprise Plan, Company Admins need to also allow the role on the Company level. Go to Company settings > Collaboration > Roles and permissions and switch the toggle to Allow Co-owner role.
⚠️ Please note that Company Admin needs to enable the role for the entire organization first, and then choose the teams where this role will be used, and enable it for each individual team.
Allowing co-owner role on Enterprise Company level
If you disable the co-owner role, all existing co-owners will be downgraded to board editors.
How to add co-owners to boards and projects
Set up by: board/projects owners, co-owners
Note that only team members can be assigned co-owner role. A co-owner should be specifically invited to the board via email and be on the list of board collaborators. If you are an admin with content admin permissions, make sure to add yourself to the board as an owner and then assign co-owners.
To invite the user to your board, open the board Share dialog, type in their email address, set access rights, and click Send invitations. To promote the user to co-owner, open Sharing settings and choose Is co-owner in the drop-down menu.

To add a co-owner to a project, invite the user to the project and choose the role in the drop-down menu. You can add an unlimited number of co-owners to boards and projects.

To remove a co-owner, open board Sharing settings (or Project settings) and select another access level for the user or remove them.

What co-owners can do
Co-owners can perform the following actions on boards in addition to what editors can:

Manage board content settings and collaboration tool settings
Decide who can copy board content and manage collaboration tools including timer, voting, video chat, screen sharing and attention management

Hide and reveal frames
Hide frame content during meetings and workshops until it's ready to be shown

Add protected lock
Prevent content from accidentally being moved or deleted during collaboration by adding protected lock on the board

Add board password
Secure board content and ensure that the right people have access to public boards by adding a board password

Download a board backup
Create archived copies of boards. As any other user, co-owner can also restore boards from backups

Add co-owners
Grant co-owner role to users so that they can perform all of the actions above
- Change board cover and rename the board
- Share the board/project
Change access rights of the team and other users on the board or project - Configure advanced board sharing permissions
If you are a project co-owner, you can perform all actions above for all boards in the project.
Co-owners cannot:
- delete board/project
- move board to another team
- change board/project owner
Frequently asked questions
- I do not have the option to assign a co-owner. Why?
This feature is currently available on Business and Enterprise plans only. The Admin should activate the feature in settings. Only team members can be promoted to co-owners. You need to first invite the member to your board via email and then assign the role. - I’m an admin with content admin permissions enabled. Why can’t I add board co-owners?
In order to add board co-owners as an admin with CAP (Content Admin Permissions), you must first add yourself to the board as an owner, then assign co-owners. - Should I additionally pay for co-owners invited to my boards?
Only team members can be co-owners. If a user is not a member of your team, you first need to invite them and purchase a seat. Then you will be able to add them as a co-owner.
